What happens to each piece.
Everything here comes from Japan: cameras, lenses, watches, pens and audio. Each piece is brought to California and goes through the bench, where it’s tested, serviced, and graded before it goes up for sale.
The part that matters most is the buying, choosing pieces that are worth the trouble in the first place. After that it’s the bench, and then the listing, where we write down what we found, faults included, and put a price on it that makes sense next to what the same piece sells for elsewhere.
The name, アカリドウ, comes from akari, meaning light, and dō, a hall, the ending you’ll find on old Japanese shop names like Shiseido. We think of it as the light you hold up to an object so you can see it properly, which is more or less what we do all day.
